Spanning two decades of love, struggle, and writing, renowned playwright and poet, Jesse Bliss, founder of the Roots and Wings Project, weaves together her mystical life story with excerpts from her estuary of plays, poems, and truth-telling prose in A Record of Light.
From the Prologue:
"It’s important to note that there are secrets we bury in our skin for as long as needed, perhaps for all time. Outwardly, even those of us that are artists, may appear to be societal assets of expression, when in fact there is much silence being held. We are not wrong for that. We are protecting ourselves. Art offers the sacred space to express truth.
"My work has continued and flourished despite dark forces that are often working against me. I have the burden, like so many of us, of breaking generations of harm across my back. I am single handedly healing the tragedies of the women before me and my inheritance of trauma.
"These pages journey through excerpts of scripts and selections of poetry, exploring the relationship of my life and art. We create in response to major life events, to struggles, to obstacles. The impact of these occurrences on our lives can be so great, it can only be processed through art.
“In these pages I ask: Who or what has kept me safe? Where have I journeyed and for what purpose? How has art saved me time and again? How is it saving me now?"
